The "Brand" experience on the "OS"

I had been always thinking about and all the technology players always fails on how to make their "Brand" experience on a OS that they not control.

For example:
  • How Microsoft want their user experience on Android OS?
  • How Google want their user experience on Windows OS?
  • How Yahoo want their user experience on iOS OS?
Every company seems fails on this area and it not only a thing of controlling the OS, it is more about caring about the user experience. All of them just have a different set of applications that runs on a specific platform and do not see the third party OS as a whole in the user experience.

Even when we look at HP, Lenovo, Dell and other PCs manufacturer, that have years of experience trying to customize Windows, they offer an incomplete set for the experience.

In HP and Lenovo PCs I had seen applications that are not consist between each other (in the same brand). And the worst thing is that they to put you too much "bloatware" on their machines. (software that do not brings value). And this "bloatware" is also very inconsistent with the "brand" software. So the complete user experience gets hurt at the end.

Here it goes for example, here are Yahoo!'s apps on Android OS:
How this apps merge together with Android OS? How Yahoo! wants the user experience on Android?
While some companies only have a single app and that enough, I don't think this is case of Yahoo!. Yahoo! need to put their service, news, menssenger, mail, etc on the Android as a whole. So they can not longer see their "Android Strategy" as a set of apps.

Even Microsoft failed sometime with their experience on Windows OS. Remember that MSN Live apps looked like a complete disconnected applications from the OS? That even happens today on Windows 8, where screen personalization, screensaver and power settings seems like three complete different apps called together with links.

Let see Google on Windows OS. They have the following applications:
  • Chrome Browser
  • Google Drive Client
  • Google Music upload client
  • Google search bar for IE
  • Picassa (with the picture viewer too)
But all seems disconnected and created for different teams, instead of setting just one single Google experience for the Windows OS.

Suggestions?

Ouch!.. this is hard,  because it is easy to rant about it and don't give any solution.

For example this is what Apple does this very good, they see their OSes as a whole and not a just putting together all the apps they can include in the OSes. But Apple also fail to see their experience behind the OS they do not control.

It seems that they reached a state that if they don't own the platform they don't care about the complete user experience for my brand. Possible technology companies needs to focus more on having people dedicated to the user experience on each platform that the company thinks it is strategical.

Take a look at every "Brand" software in context of a whole with the OS, not just check that every individual software works ok, check them all together. Think how your brand wants Android, Windows, iOS, MacOS be seen and used.

Pregunta: ¿Cuando van a venir?

Cheap from China: VONets Wifi Bridge - VAP11G

I always wanted to try one of this adapters. This is a wifi network interface that connects to the Ethernetport. So, if you have a device that do not have Wifi and only have Ethernet, you can use one of this to connect this device to a Wifi access point.

This can be usefull for devices like TVs, Xbox, Ethernet only printers , old ethernet computers, or even for OS/2-eComStation when you don't have a wifi adapter driver for it.

So I got this VAP11G at ebay for $17 to try it out.

Drivers

Please notice that the application (since it is not a driver after all) are only required to configure the device and set the SSID specs. After that to make it work, you just need to plug it into the ethernet port of the device that is required to be connected to the wifi network.

Configuration

You need to configure this device first to put the SSID and the password. Once it is configured you can take it to any other device with Ethernet port to try it out.

To configure it you need to install the "VAP11G Setup" software that came with the adapter.  This software also uses "WinPCap" to make a bridge with the adapter in Windows and allow you to configure it.

Windows 8 (64 bits)

Require: VONETs VAP11G WiFi Bridge Configured Tool (5.62 MB) -  5.0.30.4
and:  WinPcap 4.1.3

After installing the requirements the VAP11g Wifi Bridget Configuration tools works fine.

It found the network adapter

It found all wifi networks on the area

Allowed to put the password on it.
After that the VAP11G green light started to flash.

Windows 7

 Not tried yet.

Windows XP

I was able to configure the device using Windows XP. WinPCap and VAP11G run fine under this OS. I was able to configure the wifi network with VAP11G and I got it read to make it work with a local ethernet only printer and also with a PC with eComStation

The printer and PC worked fine. They both were able to connect to the wifi via the ethernet port.
